Few books turn me into a gasping, squeeing, over excited fangirl((that’s a complete lie. A lot of books do)) but this series is definitely one of them. Even thinking about it while I write this review is making it difficult for me to keep from FREAKING OUT.

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well… There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it.

After the events of Onyx I pretty much only wanted one thing out of this book. Lots of Daemon and Katy togetherness.

Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. And I loved their dynamic as a couple. I loved that Daemon didn’t lose his sarcastic, snide side. It was just tempered with a bit of a sweet, romantic side. I loved how they argued but never ignored one another suggested they shouldn’t be together. They worked to find their balance together and it made the last couple chapters of the book just perfect.

Also, non-stop action. Some lose threads were tied up from the previous book and a lot more threads were introduced. I’m really glad we got to see how the bond works when one of the people in a bond are seriously, life threateningly, injured. That was interesting. And I liked how everyone suspects that they are being controled and that even the good things happening to them are being “arranged.” It puts an intersting dynamic on everything.

OH! I really, really loved the dynamic between Katy and Dee in this one. After the ending of Onyx I couldn’t imagine how they were going to interact in this Opal. But it was handled very, very well. I loved that Katy didn’t try to apologize or beg Dee to forgive her. She just waited and gave her space and missed her. I loved that she never tried to defend herself to the people who had suffered the most because of her mistakes. She just accepted that she’d been stupid. But I also loved how the friendship wasn’t gone. It was strained and difficult, but something that important to the both of them wouldn’t just turn into hate or indifference. As much as I love Daemon and the romance in these books I love the friendships and the different girls just as much.

I think the word balance is what this book is all about. Katy spends much of the book figuring out how to have a balance between her normal life, (high school, blogging, spending time with mother, dating Daemon) and her alien life (testing new powers, destroying the house, infiltrating government buildings). Likewise I feel that the books strength lies in the balance between all the action versus all the conversation. Just when I was feeling I need some Katy and Daemon time, there was some. And just when i was feeling they would get back to the alien stuff now, they did. I never once felt there was too much or too little of either part of their lives.

And the ending happened. I’m not going to lie. It’s a cliffhanger. I…it…I don’t know how I’m going to wait for the next one. I just don’t know how. I mean…what is going to happen???? How is it going to happen? How are they ever going to be safe and and stuff????

Ugh. I’m just going to curl up into a ball and sob for the next six months.
