At first I wasn’t going to do one of these because I was sure my list would be basically the same as Leiah’s. She does have excellent taste in books…by which I mean we like the same thing most of the time.
But then I was thinking about it a bit and I realized she left out a couple key books that are fantastic. So, here my list of five books being released this fall that you simply cannot miss.
The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff
This book was fantastic. The world building, the characters, the plot, the twists, the breaking of my heartstrings, the crying it made me do. All of it was fantastic. Brenna has a very simplistic style of writing, and it works so well. She really tells more with less. A very, very original take on the current trend of angels and demons. I loved every word of this book.
The Space Between will be released on November 15th
Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson
I love almost everything that Maureen has written. She is basically a genius. A witty, funny, awesome genius who knows how to tell a good story. Name of the Star is so far her most plot orientated book, I feel. There’s a lot going on, there’s mysteries to be solved, two sets of characters to get to know, and ghosts killing people. What’s not to love? Oh, also, copious amounts of intelligent humour. Awesomeness on dead trees basically.
Name of the Star will be released on September 29th
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
So, I read Shiver once it was released in paperback, and it was okay. Nothing about it made me want to read the rest of the series. So, I was glad I got a review copy of this book because, while it sounded awesome, I wasn’t sure if Maggie’s style of writing was my thing, or what. But, I will definitely be purchasing this book once it comes out. It was so good. The beginning builds so slowly that I didn’t even notice how much I was getting sucked in. And by the end I was so in love with all of the characters, humans and horses, that I couldn’t even have told how I wanted the race to turn out. It was a standalone but I’m DYING for more of Sean and Puck. More so than almost any of the cliffhangers I’ve read recently.
The Scorpio races is out October 18th
Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
These last two books are going to overlap with Leiah’s list, but that just means you should be extra sure you read them. I loved Lola and the Boy Next Door so much more than Anna and the French Kiss, and I really, really liked Anna. Cricket was so awesome. He was such a cute nerd boy, my favourite type of boy! And he was so genuine and awesome and just cute. I want one. And then, of course, there is Lola herself and her awesome family. Stephanie writes such great characters, just enough quirk and passion for the filling in of the blanks to be easy and joyful and for them to be full and awesome characters. This was such a joy to read.
Lola and the Boy Next Door will be released on September 29th
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
What can I say about this book that hasn’t already been said? It’s beautiful and sad and complex and wonderful and has the most gorgeous writing. The story just flows through your mind until you’re crying into the pages at the end and you don’t know how you got there or where the hours went. This book might just be my absolute favourite of the fall line-up. It’s been months since I read it and I still can’t stop thinking about it. If you can only afford one book over the next two months, make it this one. Please. You wont regret it.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone will be released on September 27th (Tomorrow!!!!!)
